Grace Leekyung Kang, a renowned haegeum artist, leads a multi-faceted career that encompasses her musical influences as a performer, both as a soloist and chamber musician, and her vocation as a scholar.
Awarded Gold Prize at the Nan-Gye Korean Traditional Music Competition, Kang debuted as a soloist through “The 19th Concert for the New Artists,” hosted by the Korean Court Music Institute.
Kang appeared as a soloist throughout the United States. Namely, in New York in 2010, directed by the Korea Society, she gave a solo recital titled, “Haegeum for the Heart.” Kang also appeared in the Richmond Folk Festival and the Mexico Chihuahua International Festival.
In a collaboration with New York artist Joo Hyun Park, Grace Kang was featured in a Jazz-Haegeum album, “When Jazz Guitar Met Haegeum,” in 2014.
An alumna of Gugak National High School, Kang pursued her academic path in both music and education, receiving a B.A. and double M.A. from Yong-In University, and a Ph.D. in traditional Korean music at Han-Yang University in 2015.
In addition to making appearances in Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, and Lincoln Center, Dr. Kang serves as a cultural representative throughout the tri-state area and Washington D.C., sharing traditional Korean music in universities and performing at South Korean and American government events.
Her album, “Place in My Heart,” and single, “Beautiful and Splendid,” Part 1 were released in 2022 and 2023, respectively, with Part 2 released in July of 2023. Currently, Dr. Kang is a member of music band G-Hwaja, and the successor for the lyrics of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Decree No. 41.
As an ambassador for traditional Korean culture, haegeum performer Grace Leekyung Kang shares her music through her deeply touching artistry and voice.
